I recall vividly the benefit my practice received from the knowledge that my clients, or even my clients’ spouses, had a safe haven provided by Women’s Crisis Services of Waterloo Region to which they could resort while proceedings were taken to arrange solutions in difficult circumstances.

I concluded that if members of the local legal community were made aware of the capital funding needs for the recent rebuilding of Haven House, due in part to lack of direct assistance from senior levels of government, they would respond generously. Lawyers generally are well aware of the essential role of non-judicial resources, like Haven House, in sustaining the justice system.

Several long-time colleagues and also more recently admitted members of the Bar responded to my invitation to join the Lawyers for Haven House team to invite legal professionals to contribute. These include:

Ric Noll of Dueck, Sauer, Jutzi & Noll, Lisa Toner, Elikem Deley, and Katy Hughes, of SorbaraLaw, and Gloria Ichim of Gehl & Gehl.

Together we have contacted dozens of lawyers and solicited thousands of dollars to reduce the Haven House capital debt. We are very grateful to our many legal colleagues who have contributed so generously to our efforts. To date, almost $10,000 has been raised in the Lawyers for Haven House Campaign thanks, in part, to the following generous donors:

David Lang Lang, Lang & Lang Kitchener
Phaedra Klodner Phaedra Klodner Kitchener

We are indebted to the many staff and volunteers at Women’s Crisis Services who offer their time and talent caring for vulnerable women and children in our community.”
