Whether you’re exploring a new career or ready to try something different, SHE Builds is a skilled trades program for women and gender-diverse survivors of gender-based violence to gain greater independence and stability.
About The Program
Empowering survivors of gender-based violence, one trade at a time
SHE Builds is an education and employment program designed for women and gender-diverse survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) who are interested in exploring careers in the skilled trades.
The program combines employment preparation, hands-on skilled trades training, job placement opportunities, and ongoing wraparound supports to help participants build confidence, gain industry-recognized skills, and move toward long-term economic independence.
The program is delivered through a partnership between YWCA Cambridge, Women’s Crisis Services of Waterloo Region, Conestoga College, Sexual Assault Support Centre of Waterloo Region, and Interval House of Hamilton.
Funded by the Government of Ontario Skills Development Fund.
What to expect
Program Journey
Initial Intake & Program Planning
Every participant begins with a one-on-one intake conversation to explore their goals, interests, and readiness for the program.
The Foundation For Success
Participants complete YWCA Cambridge’s Small Steps to Success program, an eight-week employment and life skills program that helps participants build confidence and workplace readiness.
Skilled Trades Training
Then, you will continue with Conestoga College, where they receive hands-on training based on their interests, experience, and career goals.
Job Placement & Employment Support
After completing the fast-tracked school components, you are connected with vetted skilled trades employers, who have completed training from Sexual Assault Support Centre of Waterloo Region and Interval House of Hamilton, so you can gain practical workplace experience in a safe, trauma-informed environment. Participants continue to receive individualized support throughout placement.

Who is eligible?
This program may be a good fit for individuals who:
- Identify as women or gender-diverse.
- Have experienced gender-based violence, including intimate partner and sexual violence.
- Are interested in exploring or pursuing a career in the skilled trades.
- Are ready to participate in education, skills development, and employment preparation.
- Would benefit from individualized supports while working toward employment goals.
Program eligibility is reviewed through an individual intake process.
What support is available?
Wraparound supports are available throughout the program and may include:
- Individual case management
- Mentorship
- Community referrals
- Transportation assistance (where eligible)
- Child minding assistance (where eligible)
These supports are intended to reduce barriers and help participants successfully complete the program.
How are employers vetted?
Before placements begin, participating employers receive training and support from the Sexual Assault Support Centre of Waterloo Region and Interval House of Hamilton through training and programming designed to help create safer, more respectful, and inclusive workplaces.
Employers learn about:
- Preventing workplace harassment and gender bias
- Allyship and inclusive leadership
- Bystander intervention
- Creating respectful and supportive workplace cultures
This training helps employers better understand the experiences of women and gender-diverse people working in the skilled trades and provides practical tools to foster safer, welcoming work environments. Throughout placement, these community partners also provide ongoing support and resources to help address challenges and promote positive workplace experiences.
Our goal is to ensure participants feel supported, respected, and confident as they build skills and begin their journey in the skilled trades.
How much does the program cost?
The program is completely free for eligible participants. Transportation and childcare assistance may also be available for those who qualify.
Do I need experience in the skilled trades?
No. Whether you’re exploring the trades for the first time or already have some experience, the program is designed to meet participants where they are.
How long is the program?
Program length varies depending on the training pathway. Staff will discuss the options that best fit your goals during the intake process.
What kinds of trades can I explore?
Carpentry, electrical, welding, machining, manufacturing, cabinetmaking, and more.
Can I still participate if I'm receiving counselling or other supports?
Absolutely. In fact, the program is designed to work alongside other community supports.
